Isocyanate
Catalysts |
Isocyanate catalysts
contain small quantities of Isocyanate and
Ethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether Acetate.
In spite of the contents of these two
noxious ingredients, paints containing
Isocyanate Catalysts, may be used without
risk to health providing the following
recommendations are observed together with
generally good standards of industrial
hygiene.
Personnel
Persons with a history of
Asthma or similar respiratory conditions
should not be engaged in any process
which involves the use of Isocyanate.
Plant Design
Spraying operations which
involve products containing the above
mentioned ingredients should be carried
out in suitable spray booths or
enclosures under exhaust ventilation so
that all spray mists are effectively
removed from the spray operators
breathing zone and conducted away from
the spray booth area.
Exhaust Ventilation
Exhaust ventilation
should be designed so that spray mist is
conducted away to a safe place. Air flow
velocities should be sufficient to
disperse spray mists and vapors
effectively.
Normally, an air flow
velocity of one meter per second may be
considered sufficient.
Breathing Apparatus
All operators working
inside of the spray booth area (whether
spraying or not), should wear compressed
air line breathing apparatus conforming
to BS4667: Part 3:1974 or other air fed
equipment which provide equivalent
protection both during the spraying
process and until such time as all spray
mists have cleared.
The
equipment used to supply the air to the
breathing apparatus should conform to
BS4275_1975. Care should be taken to
ensure that the supply of air to the
equipment is drawn from an
uncontaminated source and that an
efficient oil, water and fume filter is
fitted to provide breathable air.
Where
operators are required to work within
the booth, an alarm system should be
fitted to warn the user of the apparatus
in the event of air pressure failure;
when the air pressure falls to the
minimum safe working level of the
apparatus.
Persons entering the
spray booth or enclosure for short
periods (less than 15 minutes) when
spraying is taking place may be
protected from inhaling spray mist by
wearing a suitable respirator conforming
to BS2091: 1961 fitted with a type
"CC" Charcoal canister.
Safety Handling
Persons engaged in
handling and mixing paints containing
Isocyanate Catalysts, should wear
protective clothing, avoiding skin and
eye contact. In the event of splashes on
the skin or into the eyes, wash the
affected area with copious amounts of
water and seek medical aid immediately.
Sanding
It is recommended that
all persons engaged in dry sanding of
paint finishes, known or suspected to be
of a type hardened by Isocyanate, take
the same precautions and wear the same
breathing apparatus as recommended for
operators spraying products containing
Isocyanate.

Additional Information
Storage
Store in tightly sealed
containers, at ambient temperatures.
Protect from moisture, evaporation and foreign
materials. Process ability of Isocyanates
and products containing Isocyanates
can be adversely affected by evaporation
and contamination.
Shelf Life
12 months, provided
materials are kept in sealed original
containers under specified conditions.
